TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cabin Crew on the Royal Air Force A330-200 ‘Voyager’ Aircraft of 10 Sqn and 101 Sqn
  • Cabin Crew on the Royal Air Force Envoy IV CC1 Aircraft of 32 Sqn (The Royal) at RAF Northolt
  • After your 1st flying tour you could also be part of our Specialist Field catering Squadron or work alongside our industry partners in Military Messes

Once fully trained in Catering Hospitality and RAF Cabin Crew duties you will be responsible for the comfort, safety and welfare of passengers travelling on 10 Sqn or 101 Sqn Voyager aircraft based at RAF Brize Norton.

Your duties will include greeting passengers as they board and exit the plane, providing special attention to passengers as required. Serving meals and refreshments, checking the condition and provision of on-board emergency equipment and information for passengers, demonstrating emergency equipment and safety procedures. As well as administering first aid and dealing with passenger or crew emergencies.

Having gained Voyager experience you could competitively transfer to 32 (The Royal) Squadron, fly on the Envoy IV CC1 aircraft based at RAF Northolt and routinely fly with Royals, The Prime Minister and senior members of the Cabinet and HM Forces.

After your first flying tour, unless you transfer to 32 (TR) Sqn, you will be employed on the ground, for at least one tour; supporting unit food services with our industry partners or as a member of 3 Mobile Catering Sqn, at RAF Wittering, providing military field catering on Operations and Exercises worldwide. Returning to Cabin Crew duties, after a ground tour, will be voluntary or to meet the need of the Service.

Your first tour will be as Cabin Crew on the Airbus A330-200 Multi Role Tanker Transport Aircraft “Voyager”.

You will be the face of the Royal Air Force and interact with all Voyager passengers, including members of the Royal Family and Government Ministers.

Travelling all over the world you could be directly involved in world events as they happen. Once fully trained in Catering Hospitality and RAF Cabin Crew duties you will be responsible for the comfort, safety and welfare of passengers travelling on 10 Sqn or 101 Sqn Voyager aircraft based at RAF Brize Norton. TRAINING AND CAREER

TRAINING YOU’LL RECEIVE

Your career will start with a 10-week Basic Recruit Training Course at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. The course is designed to help you adjust to a military environment. As well as fitness and military training, you’ll also learn about the RAF lifestyle.

SPECIALIST TRAINING

All entrants will complete specialist food service training at the Food Services Training School (Air) at Worthy Down, pre-employment land and sea survival training at Defence Survival Training Organisation, RAF St Mawgan. Decompression Training at the Aviation Medicine
Training Wing, RAF Henlow and A330-200 Cabin Crew training at the AirTanker Academy, RAF Brize Norton, before finishing their flying training with Sqn instructors on 10 Sqn/101 Sqn.


Due to the multiple agencies involved in this training it will take between 15–16 weeks to complete.

(QUALIFIED AGS) SPECIALIST TRAINING

After recruit training, you will still complete the specialist training course to familiarise yourself with A330-200 Cabin Crew duties and food service procedures. On successful completion of the specialist training, you will then qualify for immediate promotion to Senior Aircraftman.

YOUR FIRST TOUR

Your first tour will be as Cabin Crew on the Airbus A330-200 Multi Role Tanker Transport Aircraft “Voyager”. During your first tour, you will consolidate your training and gain valuable experience that will prepare you for the rest of your RAF career. The consolidation period includes your Trade Ability Tests (TATs). Successful completion of TATs demonstrates that an individual has achieved an initial level of competence and is a prerequisite for promotion to the rank of SAC, unless you are on a Qualified AGS engagement. A first tour is always demanding but also highly rewarding and you will be given the time to develop your skills and become an effective member of the team.

As your career progresses, we will continue to train you to the highest standard and equip you with the skills you require to take on new responsibilities.  This means that there are opportunities for management, leadership, health and safety training and a wide range of associated qualifications.  These include -

YOUR FUTURE CAREER PROSPECTS/PROGRESSION

Further promotion to the rank of Corporal and beyond is by competitive selection. We want you to grow and experience all the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities that being an AGS has to offer, but it will be up to you manage your career and tell us when you are ready for a new challenge. Your first posting will be for 3 years plus an additional 1 year, if agreeable to all parties, and all following tours will be 3-5 years. SACs can be employed on Cabin Crew Squadrons, Catering Retail and Leisure Units, 3 Mobile Catering Squadron and on VIP duties. On promotion to Corporal you can add Instructional duties to possible employment areas.

QUALIFICATION OPPORTUNITIES

All AGS entrants will be enrolled on the Cabin Crew Apprenticeship Diploma Level 3, Reference: ST0558.

This qualification is recognised by all the trailblazers – British Airways, British Airways City Flyer, Flybe, EasyJet, Virgin, Eastern Airways, BMI Regional & Titan Airways. The apprenticeship is directly transferable to the industry after completion of service.

TRAINING AND CAREER

INITIAL TRAINING

RECRUIT TRAINING: Your training will start with a Basic Recruit Training Course (BRTC) Module 1 consisting of 4 weekends. This is then followed by BRTC Module 2, which is a 15-day residential
training course at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. This training course will prepare you for service life in one of the most respected military forces in the world; it is also designed to help you tune into the military environment and way of life. As well as military training, you’ll learn about the core values, code of conduct and history of the RAF, as well as its unique lifestyle.

SPECIALIST TRAINING

All entrants will complete pre-employment land and sea survival training at Defence Survival Training Organisation, RAF St Mawgan. Decompression Training at the Aviation Medicine Training Wing, RAF Henlow and A330-200 Cabin Crew training at the Air Tanker Academy, RAF Brize Norton, before finishing their flying training with Sqn instructors on 10 Sqn/101 Sqn.

(Qualified AGS) Specialist Training

After recruit training, you will still complete the specialist training course to familiarise yourself with A330-200 Cabin Crew duties and food service procedures. On successful completion of the specialist training, and six qualifying flying sectors you will then qualify for promotion to Air Specialist.

COMMITMENT AND MANDATORY TRAINING

You will initially join the RAF Reserve for a period of 5 years. As a Reservist you will be expected to commit to a minimum of 27 days each year and maintain your qualifications on the Voyager Aircraft. You will be required to carry out mandatory training either at your Squadron or
through the online Defence Learning Environment (DLE). You will also need to maintain a level of fitness that allows you to pass the annual RAF Fitness Test.

Commitment and location

You will have to commit to 27 days per year.


Each year includes a 15-day block for general RAF training, and 12 separate days for extra training or exercises.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

ALL APPLICANTS MUST:

Be between 17.5 and 47 years old. (Must attest before 48th birthday).

Be able to pass an RAF swim test (see below) and be within the height range of 161cm to 195cm.

*Until at least you have completed one year of service and successfully completed Professional Workplace Assessments on first posting.

Qualified AGS:

All the unqualified AGS qualifications, plus at least one of the following:

  • At least 12 months currency, within the last 24 months, as qualified airline industry Cabin Crew.
  • Cabin Crew Apprenticeship Level 3.
  • City and Guilds Diploma in Air Cabin Crew Operations Level 2 - Including core elements: Introduction to Airline Aviation Operations. Health, Safety and Security. Airline Emergency Procedures. Crew Room Duties. Role of Cabin Crew (on- board), Preparation for employment as Air Cabin Crew.

All candidates must be able to swim.

NATIONALITY & RESIDENCY

Non-British / Commonwealth Citizens (with ‘right to work’ immigration status) applying for Logistic Profession AGS are to be naturalised as a British citizen before entry to the service and hold a UK passport.

Employment restrictions may be imposed within the Logistics Branch and Trades in relation to the rapid and effective deployability of RAF personnel to countries that apply travel restrictions to non-UK personnel. Non-British personnel applying for these fields of employment are required to certify that they have been advised of the nationality-imposed employment limitations and the consequences of not naturalizing as a British citizen.

Whether or not you were born in the United Kingdom, you should have resided there for the 5 years immediately preceding your application. However, candidates with a minimum of 3 years will be considered.

The first of these is the Pre-Joining Fitness Test (PJFT) which takes place at a fitness centre local to you. This consists of the following:

  • 2.4km (1.5m) run on a treadmill (set to zero incline)
  • Achieve the required number of press-ups - within 60 seconds
  • Achieve the required number of sit-ups - within 60 seconds

The second fitness test will take place at RAF Halton on day one of your initial training. This consists of the following:

  • Achieving the required score on the Multi-Stage Fitness Test (MSFT or Bleep test)
  • Achieve the required number of press-ups - within 60 seconds
  • Achieve the required number of sit-ups - within 60 seconds

Tattoos may be worn on the side and back of the neck but tattoos on the back of the neck must not extend above the natural hairline (scalp tattoos are not permitted). In addition, tattoos must not be visible below the sleeve cuff while wearing uniform, although a single finger (not thumb) tattoo that could be covered by a ring may be permitted
  • Have body piercing which causes holes that do not close up
  • Declare yourself to be an 'undischarged' bankrupt

Beard Policy: A revised facial hair policy has been agreed by the Air Force Board which will allow serving personnel to wear a smart, neatly-trimmed, full-set beard whilst maintaining high standards of appearance. The length of acceptable beards is between Grade 1 (2.5mm) and Grade 8 (25.5mm). The wearing of beards during Phase 1 and Phase 2 training is currently under consideration and details will be advised when available

The length of acceptable beards is between Grade 1 (2.5mm) and Grade 8 (25.5mm). The wearing of beards during Phase 1 and Phase 2 training is currently under consideration and details will be advised when available
