WHAT IS
HOSPITALITY?

Keeping everyone nourished and energised, Hospitality is an essential part of the RAF. You’ll be trained to prepare and deliver meals across field kitchens, in Military messes and on-board aircraft.

OFFICER
ROLE
You’ll be responsible for a large team of service and civilian logistics personnel, managing elements of the whole RAF supply chain.
AVIATOR
ROLES
You’ll look after the welfare of our personnel and could tend to VIPs as a Chef or an Air & Ground Steward.

Life in the kitchen is high-pressure and you’ll develop excellent organisational and communication skills to work in the kitchen and front of house. You’ll learn to thrive in an environment where no two days are ever the same.

Chef

From cooking first-class food at events to working in a field kitchen, you’ll learn a whole host of culinary skills that will prepare you for every situation. You’ll have all the skills in your arsenal to deliver wherever in the world you’re cooking, and to whoever you’re cooking for; from crew members to VIPs and Royalty.

Air & Ground Steward

From working on the RAF’s flagship aircraft ‘Voyager' to working out on operations around the world. You could find yourself working in a field kitchen or working for high-ranking Officers, who entertain Government Ministers and members of the Royal Family.

What qualifications do I need for Hospitality roles?

TO APPLY FOR A LOGISTICS OFFICER ROLE YOU NEED TO:

  • Be aged between 17.5 and 47
  • Have GCSEs at grade C/4-5 or above; or SNE equivalent grade 5 or above in Mathematics, English Language and three other subjects.
  • In addition, you need at least 2 A2 Levels/3 Highers at Grade C or above (excluding General Studies or Critical Thinking) which must total a minimum of 64 UCAS points.
  • Alternatively, if you hold a UK degree at Grade 2:2 or higher (or acceptable alternative) you only need Mathematics and English Language GCSEs at a minimum of Grade C (Grade 4 to 5 with effect from Aug 17) or Mathematics and English Language SCE Standard Grades of 2 or SNE Grade 5.
  • Be a citizen of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland, or holder of dual UK/other nationality or have been a Commonwealth citizen since birth.
  • Additionally, whether or not you were born in the UK, you should reside here for 5 years immediately preceding your application (candidates with a minimum of 3 years will be considered).

TO APPLY FOR A HOSPITALITY AVIATOR ROLE YOU NEED TO:

  • Be aged between 16 and 47 *
  • Qualification requirements are dependent on the exact role and whether you wish to enter the role as a qualified or unqualified personnel. For roles such as an unqualified Chef, no formal educational qualifications are required, however other roles may differ. Individual requirements can be found on the specific role pages.
  • Be a citizen of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland, or holder of dual UK/other nationality or have been a Commonwealth citizen since birth.
  • Additionally, whether or not you were born in the UK, you should reside here for 5 years immediately preceding your application (candidates with a minimum of 3 years will be considered).

*You must be aged between 17.5 and 47 for an Air & Ground Steward role

 

Do I need to be physically fit for Hospitality roles?
  • Every person in the RAF is required to maintain a level of fitness to complete both initial and specialist training, and to do their role effectively. The exact fitness requirements will depend on your role, age and gender. *
  • Fitness is a key part of RAF life – with all the clubs and sports you can get involved with on a wide variety of levels, from occasional fun to Olympic competition.

*Additionally, all candidates for the Air and Ground Steward role must be able to swim.

Where will I be based?

RAF Hospitality personnel work on RAF bases all over the UK and abroad. Where you will be exactly is dependent on your role and what each base currently requires. Speak with your local AFCO for more information.
